Writing About Good Stuff is Crucial
Far too much media and news coverage centres on the negative. In our “Brands we LOVE” series, we have made it our mission to highlight the businesses out there doing good. Doing it just how we would if we were them. With no better place than home, it’s time to showcase the Bournemouth gang. It’s in no particular order by the way, as we LOVE them all!
The Green House Hotel
Who doesn’t enjoy a night away in a hotel for some good old rest and relaxation? We think everyone does. Sadly though, tourism is responsible for 8% of global carbon emissions. Thank goodness that not everyone in the industry is burying their heads in the sand. With that said, let us introduce The Green House in Bournemouth. This hotel lives up to both its name and its eco-credentials entirely. From the materials used to build the hotel and the creation of its own energy on-site, to the local produce sourced for the outstanding Arbor restaurant and its beehives in the garden, these guys have hit the nail on the head with their considered approach to luxury nights away and the environment. So if you’re travelling this way, why not stay here? It comes highly recommended by us.
Foundation Sports Dorset
Keeping kids fit, fast and full of beans is essential. Nowadays, gaming and social media have created a stay-inside, sit-on-your-bum culture for our youth. Any business out there, helping kids to get fit and active has got to feature in this list. With founder Nikki a customer of Foundation Sports Dorset, it wasn’t hard for us to mention Josh and his team on this list. Running after school clubs, holiday camps and inset day competitions in the Dorset area, they not only get our little ones learning sport but help working parents out with low cost childcare. Take a look at the classes on offer and take advantage of their free trial sessions to kick start your children’s fitness.
Camps International
Creating life-changing experiences and positively impacting the planet is no mean feat. The team at Camps International achieves just that. As a unique school expedition provider, these guys are driven by a strong sense of purpose to create ethical journeys with impact. They invest in permanent camps in the places they care about, committing to the highest standards in responsible tourism. They offer school kids a once in a lifetime opportunity. Their expeditions consist of work, adventure and cultural immersion on sustainable projects. Helping to transform kids by building confidence, purpose and gratitude. JUST WOW. For us this is the reason to invent time-travel, so the team at ETHICLY can become school students and go travelling with these guys.
Purposeful.Money
Money makes the world go around. Far too much about the way businesses behave is driven by profit. Luckily, we can see change ahead. That’s why Purposeful.Money are on our list. As the name suggests, they have created a purposeful approach to investing money. Helping the folk out there, who may have some savings they would like to see grow, to invest in socially responsible portfolios. With a unique screening solution, they find investments that make a positive impact on the environment: portfolios that address social concerns such as workplace diversity and fair trade combined. Understanding that the businesses of the future should be mindful of the planet as well as their profits, they donate 10% of theirs to purposeful initiatives, too.
Build Energy
Helping developers and architects to build more sustainable, low-energy buildings is a great eco-mission to be on. So next on our list comes Build Energy, who do just that. Established in 2007 and Bournemouth-based, these guys help throughout the building, planning and design process, shaping energy strategies to reduce carbon emissions and creating more sustainable new builds for the future. With low carbon homes rising in popularity, Build Energy work in partnership with designers and contractors to help meet this new demand. Making sustainable, commercially viable with compliant construction, their calling to “build it better” is right up our street.
Eco Sustainable Solutions
Waste not want not: an adage we hold close to our hearts. Any business making the most of waste deserves a spot on our list. Created from a light bulb moment, way back in 1993, founder Trelawney Dampney decided to take waste and make it usable again by composting it. Recycling is at the heart of what they do, processing over 250,000 tonnes of organic rubbish that no one wants every year, converting it back into products like compost, soils and chippings for re-use. Expanding out over the years into renewable energy including biomass and biogas fuels, Eco Sustainable Solutions also created a combined heat and power plant fuelled by organic materials that feeds the national grid. It’s a business that has truly earned recognition for the good stuff that they do.
Not the end but the beginning
We’ve thoroughly enjoyed putting this article together and we’ll soon be sharing more love for great brands doing good. In Arnie’s words, we’ll be back.
